The Process Of Recaulking Windows

Step 1: Remove Old Caulking:

Using a utility knife carefully cut and remove the old caulking. Depending on the type of caulking a pair of pliers, hammer and chisel or oscillating tool may be required. Ensure that you remove as much of the old material as possible. Take your time during this step to guarantee optimal adhesion for the fresh sealant.

Step 2: Clean Surface:

Thoroughly clean the joint where the old sealant was removed. Use a brush to remove any old caulking debris still clinging to surface. Using a blower may be necessary to eliminate any remaining dust, especially on a window going into brick or stone. A clean surface is essential for the new caulk to adhere effectively and create a durable seal.

Step 3: Install Backer Rod (if necessary):

Inspect the gaps around the window. If there are large or irregular gaps, apply a backer rod before caulking. Backer rods act as a filler for larger gaps, providing support for the caulk and preventing it from sinking into the opening. Press the backer rod into the gap, ensuring it sits roughly half as deep as the gap is wide. A piece of aluminum may be needed for very large gaps in order to create a long lasting, proper seal.

Step 4: Apply Caulking:

Now that the surface is prepared and clean, you are ready to caulk the window. Use a high quality exterior window caulk and seal the perimeter of the window. Be sure not to caulk above a drip cap or to cover any weep holes on the window. To be safe, allow a full two weeks of cure time before proceeding with anything like window cleaning, or pressure washing.
